About the Doctor Dr. James Hasegawa, also known by Yoichi Hasegawa, is a third-generation physician of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). He holds a Master of Traditional Oriental Medicine (MTOM) degree from Emperor's College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in Santa Monica, California, and is licensed to practice acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine both nationally (Dipl.Ac. & C.H.) and in California (L.Ac.). Having grown up in a multicultural and multilingual family, he is fluent in English, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Taiwanese. He developed a strong respect, curiosity, and awe for TCM as a teenager when his chronic skin condition was successfully treated using herbs where conventional Western medicine did not help with extreme side effects. Dr. Hasegawa also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from UCLA, where he participated in medical research at the Diabetes Research Center at the UCLA School of Medicine. During his undergraduate years, he also studied Mandarin Chinese extensively and was admitted to Peking University in Beijing, China as an exchange student. Throughout his training both here and in China, he developed a strong sense of importance of TCM as an adjunct and supplement to orthodox Western medicine for the maximum benefit to the patient. While at Emperor's College, Dr. Hasegawa participated in the special internship program at Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital in Marina del Rey, California, to treat both inpatients and outpatients in an integrated East-West setting. Choosing to further his clinical training, he has received extensive graduate and post-graduate training at several world-renowned TCM institutions in China, including China Academy of TCM (Integration Medicine Specialty of Acupuncture Orthopedics and Traumatology), Beijing University of TCM, and Chengdu University of TCM (specializing in internal medicine, diabetes, gynecology, rheumatology, acupuncture, and dermatology). In 2004, Dr. Hasegawa was among the very first acupuncturists to have earned board certification from the American Academy of Physical Oriental Medicine, which signifies proficiency in integrated Eastern-Western medical model in orthopedics, physical medicine, and pain management. This specialty led to his work in sports medicine, becoming team acupuncturist for minor league professional basketball teams in San Jose, California and Butte, Montana. A former faculty member as an Assistant Clinic Supervisor at Emperor's College, he currently maintains his private practice in south Orange County at In Balance Health and Wellness Center in San Juan Capistrano, and at RSM Physical Therapy in Rancho Santa Margarita, California.
